Accuracy

Start past choosing your subject.

Many cartoon characters are popular.

Therefore, drawing cartoon characters is similar to drawing the outlines for a portrait, you must exist accurate!

1. Proportions

Depending on the figure you are cartoon, usually the overall proportion is the outset matter yous want to check.

To practice that, use your cartoon tool (pencil in this case) as a measuring tool.

Use your finger to marking a spot on information technology, and then check for proportions.

Checking the proportion between head and body

In the case above, the height of Snoopy's head is approximately the top of its body.

Marking some points on your drawing paper, to brand sure you draw information technology in proportion.

Plan for your cartoon to fit inside the newspaper canvass.

2. Curved Lines

Many cartoon characters are a collection of different types of curves.

Curves tin can be body parts, muscles or objects (like hats).

First, expect at the direction of each curve (upward, downward, left or correct).

The direction of each curve

Then, determine the tip of that curve (toward the management of the curve).

The tip of each curve

For Snoopy's left side of the ear, you can see that the tip in that direction is touching the neck.

If you exercise not pay attention to that, you may describe the tip of that curve at the heart of the ear, instead of the bottom role.

Paying attention to curves when drawing Snoopy

The aforementioned works for every curve. Agree your pencil (or pen) vertically or horizontally, and look at the tip of each bend.

Holding a pencil horizontally and vertically

You can see that Snoopy's abdomen is bulging not in the heart, but more to the bottom.

The tip of the back is even lower, almost where information technology meets the leg.

3. Directly Lines

Once more, apply your cartoon tool (pencil) as a measuring device. This fourth dimension for angles.

This is 1 of the all-time techniques for cartoon accurately from observation.

In the adjacent case, I measured Goku's angle of eyes, and so checked if my drawing is authentic, or I need to correct the bending.

How to draw eyes in the correct angle

I did the same for each part I wanted to describe accurately.

Using a pencil to measure angles for accurate drawing

Instructions:

Close one centre when measuring angles (using a pencil).

Make sure to rotate the pencil left or right to find the angle.

Do NOT rotate the pencil frontward or dorsum. The world is 3-dimensional, but your newspaper is 2-dimensional (you lot cannot mensurate depth).

With fourth dimension (and practice), yous volition see the angles without using a pencil to measure out them.

iv. Continuity

When drawing, pay attention to overlapping.

Overlapping means an object that covers office of another object.

In the next instance, Speedy Gonzales's head is overlapping its hat. The lines for the hat need to accept continuity for it to look natural and right.

Often, objects (like weapons) are partially hidden past a trunk function (hand in this case).

One way is to draw the total object and then erase the part that is overlapped.

For direct objects, you tin utilise a ruler.

While some cartoon characters do not accept overlapping parts, some will have many.

Drawing Process

Accuracy is the most important part of drawing!

Use the methods above to practice drawing accurately. The next 3 steps will guide you how to draw and return your favorite cartoon characters.

1. Pencil Cartoon

Pencil for drawing and sketching

First stride is drawing with a pencil.

The pencil-cartoon step is the hardest. Accuracy is the key for likeness.

The principal reward of drawing with a pencil is the ability to erase and correct mistakes.

Note:

Information technology is important NOT to printing hard while drawing, in order to prevent any scars or dents on the cartoon paper.

Sketching and modifying until a desired result

Drawing, erasing and adjusting my sketch until information technology reaches the desired upshot:

Here is a listing of cartoon materials I apply.

2. Pen Cartoon

Pen for drawing outlines for cartoon characters

The second step is drawing with a technical pen.

Technical pens (also fineliners) come with different nib sizes.

A smaller nib is slap-up for small details, while a bigger nib is ameliorate for thicker contour lines.

It takes around a infinitesimal (or less, depending on the pen brand and type of newspaper) for the pen's ink to dry out. Only and then, it is safe to gently erase the pencil marks.

With practice, it is possible to draw straight with a pen and disregard step i.

If y'all are unfamiliar with drawing pens, y'all might want to check my guide for recommended cartoon pens.

Call back:

By pressing gently when drawing with a pencil, it is piece of cake to erase the pencil marks.

three. Painting with Markers

Paint marker for painting cartoon characters

The last stride is painting with markers (or any other medium).

Each cartoon grapheme has its own unique colors.

If you lot want to paint accurately (true-blue to the original character), you need to pay attention to 4 color attributes:

Hue - Color family (ruby-red, green, bluish, orangish...).

Color family, hue, with markers

Effulgence Values - Also values or tone, how dark or light each color is.

Light and dark colors with markers

Temperature - Warm and cool colors.

Red, orange and yellow are warm colors (they bring to mind burn down).

Blue, green and purple are cool colors (they bring to mind the sea or moisture grass).

Each color can be warmer or libation. In the adjacent example, look at the cool greenish (with a bluish tinge) and a warm green (with a yellowish tinge).

Also, absurd red (a fleck regal) and warm cherry (a bit orangish).

Warm and cool colors with markers

Some colors tin be neutral, only in many cases, colors will exist a chip warm or a bit cool.

It depends on the object'due south pigments, and on the colour of light sources and reflections.

Fifty-fifty a gray color can exist warm (a scrap dark-brown) or cool (a bit bluish).

In the next example, the gray colors share the aforementioned brightness value (shut your optics partially to decide brightness values), but with different temperature.

Warm, neutral and cool gray colors

Saturation - How rich and intense each colour is, or how tedious and grayness it is.

Also in this example, the colors have the same brightness value, but with different saturation.

Saturation level with markers

How to pick colors:

The color on the marking's body or cap is not necessarily the color that will prove on paper.

Information technology is very useful to create a palette (color chart) for all the markers you use.

At present it is like shooting fish in a barrel to pick the correct colour.

Afterward choosing the colors you want to employ, information technology is time to paint your figures.

What type of newspaper sheets should yous use?

For painting with markers, information technology is best to use non-absorptive paper sheets.

When painting with a dry medium, like colored pencils or pastels, paper sheets for cartoon and sketching are a better solution.

Still struggling which colour to choose?

It is possible to utilise Whatever image-editing programme (like Adobe Photoshop or Paint.net), and utilize the color picker tool to check for the exact color.

Filling a large area with the chosen colour will help in seeing the correct hue.

Using the color picker for finding the correct color

And then utilise a marker with the same color:

Step iii. Coloring with markers.

Painting the Groundwork

With markers, information technology is hard to reach a smooth texture for a big surface area, considering the markers dry fast.

Different marker brands (and dissimilar types of paper) produce different results.

Information technology is a skilful practice to divide an area into smaller areas by calculation objects like trees.

How to color backgrounds with marker pens Maestro (In one case Upon a Time)

It is amend to use a paper suitable for markers, especially when using h2o-based markers.

When using a paper for drawing & sketching, alcohol-based markers volition work better than h2o-based markers.

How to pigment the sky with markers?

For drawing clouds, get-go by painting the sky (which is darker); leave empty areas for the clouds.

Then, use lighter markers (for clouds) on meridian of the darker areas (heaven), to gently create a smooth transition from dark to light (clouds have soft edges).

For a smoother transition, like in sky color (or brightness value), start with the darker values and gradually utilize lighter markers. Vice versa will work simply as well, depending on the marker brand.

Usually, as y'all get closer to the horizon, the sky will exist lighter. If y'all are unfamiliar with atmospheric perspective, visit my perspective-drawing guide.
